Purity test for couples: how to play it together

A purity test for couples is a yes-or-no quiz about dating and relationships that gives each of you a score out of 100. To play it together, you each take it on your own phone, then compare: the Test de Pureté app puts both scores side by side, and the stories behind them are yours to tell (or not). You can try 6 questions from the Couples mode for free right below.

Question 1 of 6Couples

Have you ever said “I love you” without really meaning it?

What is a purity test for couples?

A purity test for couples is a relationship-themed take on the classic purity test: exes, jealousy, white lies, snooping and all the stuff you'd rather not bring up at dinner. The mechanics don't change: a list of experiences, a “Done that” or “Never” for each one, and a score out of 100 equal to the percentage of things you've never done. 100 means squeaky clean. 0 means you've had quite the career.

In the Test de Pureté app, it's the Couples mode: 100 questions, max heat, and a tagline that doesn't mess around: “Let's hope your crush isn't looking at your screen.” It's one of 8 modes in the app and one of three you can sample here on the site. Curious how the math works or what your verdict actually means? Here's how purity test scores work.

Some people call it a couples purity test or a relationship purity test; same idea. And like every purity test, it's a game. Your score says nothing about your morals, your worth or how solid your relationship is. It just counts boxes.

How to take a couples purity test together

The best way to take a couples purity test is separately, on two phones, then compare results together. Answering solo keeps anyone from reading over your shoulder, and keeps you from quietly editing your answers after a raised eyebrow.

Want a test run first? The preview above has 6 real Couples questions you can play right in your browser. Nothing gets sent or saved, so you can try it on the down-low. The details are on our privacy page.

  • Download the Test de Pureté app. It's free on iOS and Android, and the basic modes don't need an account.
  • Each of you opens Couples mode and answers all 100 questions without peeking at the other screen.
  • Use the compare-with-a-friend feature: the app lines up both scores, and only the scores.
  • Trade the stories that crack you up. Keep the ones you'd rather not get into to yourselves.

Ground rules that keep it fun

A purity test for couples stays fun as long as it stays a game, and four simple rules keep date night from turning into a deposition.

One more: if you laugh at their answers, you've signed up to get laughed at too. Fair's fair.

  • Be honest. A test where everybody lies is pointless, and a doctored score is usually obvious. Answer truthfully or sit this one out.
  • No trials. Whatever your partner did before you met isn't up for review tonight. A checked box is a story, not evidence.
  • Nobody owes the full story. Hitting “Done that” doesn't mean you have to hand over names, dates and a map.
  • Both in, or nobody plays. If either of you wants to stop halfway, you stop. No bargaining.

What's on a couples purity test?

Couples purity test questions cover pretty much every corner of a relationship: trust, exes, phones, forgotten dates and all the little everyday betrayals. Here are three real questions from the Couples preview.

You get the idea: nothing earth-shattering, but enough to trigger a “wait, when was this?” If you want to go somewhere strictly adults-only, that's what Hot mode is for. For a broader look at what each mode asks, browse our purity test questions page.

  • “Have you ever gone through your partner's phone?”
  • “Have you ever texted an ex in the middle of the night?”
  • “Have you ever forgotten an anniversary?”

When your scores are way apart

Two very different scores on a couples purity test aren't a red flag; they just mean you've lived different lives. Maybe one of you had a wild stretch before you met and the other was more of a homebody. Plenty of happy couples look exactly like that.

The interesting part isn't the 30-point gap, it's the stories each of you decides to tell. Pick two or three questions that crack you up, guess how your partner answered, then ask for the story. For the touchy ones, remember the nobody-owes-the-full-story rule. And if something raises a real trust issue, save it for a calm conversation later, not 11 p.m. mid-giggle.

Pro tip: before the reveal, each of you guesses the other's score. Closest guess picks the next takeout.

It's a purity test, not a compatibility test

A purity test for couples doesn't measure compatibility: it counts past experiences and predicts nothing about your future together. Matching scores don't make you soulmates, and a 40-point gap doesn't doom you.

What it's actually good at: starting conversations you'd never have had otherwise, digging up stories you somehow missed after years together, and laughing at how different you are. File it next to board games and trivia night, not next to couples therapy.

FAQ

Everything people ask us

How do you take a purity test as a couple?

Each of you takes Couples mode in the Test de Pureté app on your own phone, without looking at the other's screen. Once you're both done, the compare-with-a-friend feature shows your scores side by side. After that, what you talk about is up to you: swap stories, guess each other's answers, or just leave it at the numbers. You can get a feel for it with the 6 free questions on this page.

Is it the same as the Rice Purity Test?

No. The Rice Purity Test started at Rice University in Texas back in 1924, and its current 100-question version covers life in general. Couples mode in Test de Pureté is an original set of relationship questions, with nothing borrowed from the Rice test and no connection to the university. The scoring idea is the same, though: 100 points, and the higher you land, the more innocent you are.

Do we have to tell each other every answer?

Nope, and that's one of the ground rules. The app's comparison only shows your two scores, never your answers, so what you share beyond that is your call. Tell some stories, keep others to yourself, or save them for another day. The game works better when you both feel free. Once it starts feeling like a cross-examination, it stops being fun.

What if our scores are really different?

A big gap says nothing bad about your relationship. It just shows you took different paths before you met, which is true of most couples. Focus on the stories instead: guess a few of each other's answers, share the ones that make you laugh and skip the ones that sting. The score is a game. It doesn't measure loyalty, trust or anybody's worth.

How long should we be together before taking it?

There's no minimum, but it's more fun once you know each other a bit and can laugh about your past. Very early on, questions about exes can land awkwardly. A few years in, it's often the opposite: you find out things you never would have guessed. Either way, the app is for adults 18 and over, so that part isn't up for debate.

Is it a compatibility test?

No. A compatibility test tries to predict whether two people are a good match. A purity test just counts the experiences each of you has already had. Identical scores don't make a perfect couple, and opposite scores don't make a doomed one. Treat it as a way to talk and laugh together, not as a verdict on your relationship.
