How a purity test question works
A purity test question describes one specific thing you've either done or haven't, and it only allows two answers: “Done that” or “Never.” No “sort of,” no “it depends,” no 1-to-5 scale. That's what keeps scoring simple: on a 100-question purity test, every “Never” is worth one point, and your score out of 100 is the percentage of things you've never done.
Questions also get spicier from mode to mode: Chill stays mellow, Couples and Trash turn up the heat, and Hot and No Limit are strictly for adults. Every good question follows four principles.
- A specific experience: “skipped a class,” not “been a rebel.” Vague questions start endless arguments.
- Past tense: “Have you ever…?” It's about what actually happened, not what you'd do hypothetically.
- One action per question. If a question hides two, nobody knows how to answer it.
- A bit of humor. A good question gets a smirk before it gets a blush.
Chill mode question examples
Chill mode asks gentle questions about everyday cop-outs: ignored texts, skipped classes, people you ghosted. It's the warm-up mode, and you can play it in the preview above. Three real questions from that preview:
Its tagline: “Easy does it. We start slow. For now.” That “for now” is doing a lot of work.
- “Have you ever pretended not to have seen a message?”
- “Have you ever skipped a class or a day of work?”
- “Did you ever ghost someone?”
Squad and Couples question examples
Squad and Couples modes go after your social life and your love life, with questions built to get players talking. They're the other two modes you can preview on the site.
Squad questions revolve around loyalty and parties; Couples questions around trust, exes and forgotten dates. If you want to play them with other people, check out our guides to a purity test with friends and a purity test for couples.
- Squad: “Have you ever repeated a secret someone trusted you with?”
- Squad: “Have you ever danced on a table?”
- Squad: “Have you ever left a group chat without a word?”
- Couples: “Have you ever gone through your partner's phone?”
- Couples: “Have you ever texted an ex in the middle of the night?”
- Couples: “Have you ever forgotten an anniversary?”
The kind of questions in Money and Trash
Money and Trash modes aren't playable on the site, so here's the kind of question you'll find in each, written in the spirit of the mode. These aren't the actual app questions; they just give you the vibe.
Money (“You'd swear the tax office wrote this one”) covers cash, schemes and purchases you'd rather not explain. Trash (“Let's go through the nights that went sideways”) is all about rough mornings, chaotic trips home and decisions made after midnight. The first one has its own page: Money mode up close.
- Money: “Have you ever sold a gift someone gave you?”
- Money: “Have you ever ‘forgotten’ your wallet on purpose?”
- Money: “Have you ever bought something you didn't need just to get free shipping?”
- Money: “Have you ever kept the extra change when a cashier gave you too much?”
- Trash: “Have you ever gone back to a bar the next day to get your jacket?”
- Trash: “Have you ever sent a 3 a.m. text you regretted by 9?”
- Trash: “Have you ever slept in a bathtub?”
- Trash: “Have you ever lost a shoe on the way home from a party?”
Hot, No Limit and Ultimate: what they cover
Hot and No Limit cover adults-only territory, so we don't publish any of their questions here. Hot mode is about intimacy and what happens behind closed doors, no detours: “We won't beat around the bush, you know what this is about.” No Limit goes further still, into topics that are explicitly for grown-ups: “What happens here stays here. Promise.”
Ultimate doesn't have questions of its own: it combines all 700 questions from the other 7 modes into one test. Final boss energy. Everything's on the Ultimate mode page. All of these are played in the app, which is 18+.
Why there's no full purity test questions list here
All 700 Test de Pureté questions live in the app instead of a public purity test questions list, for one simple reason: a test you've already read loses its punch. Half the fun is hitting a question cold, in front of your friends, and watching the room react.
There's also the audience. Several modes are adults-only, and the app is 18+. A public list would be read by anyone. So the site gives you a free 6-question preview of Chill, Squad and Couples, and the Test de Pureté app, free on iOS and Android, has everything else.
And for the record: none of our questions are taken from the Rice Purity Test, the American questionnaire that started at Rice University in 1924. If you're curious, the full story is on our Rice Purity Test page.
How to write your own purity test questions
Writing your own purity test questions is the best way to get a test tailored to your crew, as long as you follow a few rules.
Not feeling creative? The 100 questions in each mode are ready to go in the app, and our guide to understanding your score tells you what to make of the result.
- Start every question with “Have you ever…?” and aim for one clear action people can answer yes or no without a debate.
- Mine your group's history: the trip that went wrong, the legendary party, the college legend. Questions everyone can relate to beat questions aimed at one person.
- Build up slowly. Start soft and save the spicy ones for the end.
- Skip anything that humiliates someone, forces a confession or touches a painful subject. The point is laughing together, not at someone's expense.
- Go for a round number, like 20, 50 or 100 questions, so the score converts to a percentage without a calculator.
